More about Alto

Alto (Richland) Alto was the home of Lucy Sartor, once one of Louisiana’s most popular artists. She “recorded” in pen and ink drawings, watercolors, and oils many of the old buildings, ferry crossings, and rural scenes that are rapidly disappearing from the Louisiana landscape.

Alto got its name because it is high enough not to flood during overflows. Sartor, who lived there during the 1927 flood, claimed, “We remained high and dry whereas all surrounding lands went under.”
